The spay procedure is the surgical removal of both ovaries and the majority of the uterus. The aim of spaying is to avoid any unwanted pregnancies as well as the more important health problems such as mammary cancer and pyometra, especially a problem in older entire dogs. The more seasons the bitch has before the procedure is done the higher the risk of developing mammary cancer later in life. The risk plateaus after the third heat.
Female rabbits (does) are desexed because of the high incidence of uterine cancer seen in entire (undesexed) does. Pre-cancer changes have been found in 80% of female rabbit over 4 years of age.
The spay procedure for dogs, cats and rabbits is a day procedure. We ask that your pet be starved after 8 o'clock the night before to have an empty stomach during the operation to avoid complications. With rabbits because of their high energy requirements, we prefer that you not starve them and supply some dry food for them during their post-spay recovery period. Your pet will generally be fit to go home that evening.
Please call us to organise a day for your pet to be spayed.
